Southern Charms presents work by printmakers Julie Belcher and Georgia Deal that feature artifacts, images, and language culled from the artists’ personal histories and Southern vernacular traditions. Belcher and Deal make use of a wide variety of print techniques: hand drawn letterpress, as well as transfer pulp printing, screenprinting, and wax resist techniques. Their prints reference elements of book construction from typesetting and typography to page layout and the use of imagery and text as elements of storytelling. Belcher and Deal’s works demonstrate the strong interconnection between book arts and printmaking processes.
This exhibition is hosted by the Smith to complement the Turchin Center exhibition,The Authority of The Book. It was organized by April Flanders, Mary Anne Redding and Jennie Carlisle.
